Your first-week checklist
- A litter box and the same litter your kitten is used to.
- Food and water bowls.
- A scratching post (two is even better: one horizontal, one vertical).
- A soft bed close to where the family spends time.
- A few toys: little balls and a feather wand.
- A carrier for trips to the vet.
Safety
Tidy away cables, small objects and any houseplants that could be dangerous, and fit your windows with cat-proof screens.
The first day
Give your kitten one quiet room and show it where the litter box and water are. Hold off on inviting everyone over right away: it's better to let the little one discover the home gradually.

Low steps or ottomans next to the sofa and bed will help your munchkin get around with confidence.
